What should my student do if they become seriously sick or injured in the dorm?
Emory Student Health Services directs students to 911 for life-threatening emergencies and publishes campus emergency and after-hours options, including Emory Police/Emergency Medical Services and nurse/clinical resources. Residence Life staff can help with the housing side of an incident, but emergency medical care should not wait for a housing-office response.
Will the college call me if my student becomes sick?
Emory Student Health explains that student health information is protected and that postsecondary student records have privacy protections. A parent should not expect an automatic call for routine sickness. In a serious health or safety emergency, FERPA and applicable health-record rules can permit disclosure to appropriate parties, including parents, when necessary.
Can I call Housing and ask what is happening with my student's room or roommate problem?
Housing staff can provide general policy and process information to a parent. Details about a particular student’s assignment, conduct matter, roommate issue, or other education-record information are subject to FERPA. The student can work directly with Housing and can authorize access where Emory’s procedures allow.
Can parents access a college student's education records if the student is our tax dependent?
Emory’s Registrar identifies the FERPA exception that permits the University to disclose education records to parents when the student is a dependent for federal income-tax purposes. Because FERPA exceptions permit rather than require disclosure, families should follow Emory’s current authorization or records-request process instead of assuming unrestricted access.
Can Emory tell parents about an under-21 alcohol or drug violation?
Emory’s FERPA guidance lists an exception allowing disclosure to parents when a student under 21 has been found responsible for violating law or University policy concerning alcohol or controlled substances. That permission does not mean every incident automatically results in parent notification.
Does FERPA still apply if my Emory student is only 17?
Emory legal guidance states that once a student is in attendance at a postsecondary institution, FERPA rights rest with the student even when the student is under 18. Parents can receive protected education-record information only with student consent or when a FERPA exception permits disclosure.
Can the college contact parents during a serious health or safety emergency?
