Start with the campus and your timeline
School and move-in eligibility
Use the official University of Maryland, Baltimore County source for the relevant campus and academic year before signing a lease or planning a student move into a family-owned home. A landlord’s approval does not establish university eligibility.
Parent and out-of-state planning
Match the lease or purchase timeline to the school calendar. For a remote move, verify the exact campus destination, inspection and touring arrangements, utilities, emergency access and maintenance responsibilities.
For a family purchase, verify occupancy, roommate rules, HOA restrictions, financing and the post-graduation plan for the actual home. Property-specific eligibility and availability are not established by this hub.

What room costs does UMBC publish for 2026–27, and how should a family compare them?
UMBC lists 2026–27 residence-hall triple/quad bedrooms at $6,912 per academic year ($3,456 per semester), hall single/double bedrooms at $9,654 ($4,827 per semester), and nine-month continuous apartment single bedrooms at $10,268 ($5,134 per semester). Its rate page says the proposed $390 annual communication fee is included in the displayed prices. Compare the same housing term, room category and included services; required dining may add a separate cost. These university housing-license prices are not private monthly rental comparables. Confirm the student's actual license, meal plan and final charges before committing.
Source record: 2026-10-19. Meal plans are additional/required for some residence categories; housing license terms not comparable to private monthly rent; fees may change and assignment is not guaranteed.
Does UMBC Residential Life offer need-based help with campus housing costs?
Yes. UMBC Residential Life publishes a Student Success Scholarship for current residential students demonstrating significant financial need to remain on campus. The award, if granted, may cover all or part of a semester's housing costs up to the cost of a double room. It is not automatic or guaranteed. Walker Avenue licensees and Residential Life paraprofessionals during the award period are excluded. Check the current application window and student's eligibility.
Source record: 2026-10-19. Funding, eligibility, award timing and amount vary; awards not guaranteed.
Where can a UMBC family start a private rental and roommate search?
Families can start with UMBC Retriever Support's Off-Campus Housing page and follow the UMBC Off-Campus Housing 101 listing and roommate-search links. The university also identifies the myUMBC Classifieds group for roommate requests. These are starting points for private-housing research, not proof a listing is university-owned or approved. Independently verify each property, lease, roommate arrangement and commute.
Source record: 2026-10-19. These university-linked directories are starting points for a private rental and roommate search. Verify each property, availability, lease terms and applicable current law separately; no listing or legal terms are verified by this guide.
How soon should a new UMBC employee enroll in health benefits?
UMBC's New Employee Benefits page states that new employees have 60 days from their original date of employment to enroll in eligible benefits through the Statewide Personnel System (SPS) Workday. Eligibility depends on employee classification and the selected plan. Confirm your effective coverage and any qualifying-event exception with UMBC HR rather than assuming every option starts automatically.
Source record: 2026-10-19. Employee classification, qualifying-event exceptions and plan effective-date controls require HR-specific verification; no automatic-entitlement guarantee.
