Start with the campus and your timeline
School and move-in eligibility
Use the official Dakota State University source for the relevant campus and academic year before signing a lease or planning a student move into a family-owned home. A landlord’s approval does not establish university eligibility.
Parent and out-of-state planning
Match the lease or purchase timeline to the school calendar. For a remote move, verify the exact campus destination, inspection and touring arrangements, utilities, emergency access and maintenance responsibilities.
For a family purchase, verify occupancy, roommate rules, HOA restrictions, financing and the post-graduation plan for the actual home. Property-specific eligibility and availability are not established by this hub.

Which tenant charges may a Madison landlord deduct from a security deposit?
Section43-32-24 allows reasonably necessary amounts for unpaid rent, other money due under an agreement, and restoring the home to its starting condition, excluding ordinary wear. It does not authorize charging ordinary wear as tenant damage.
Source record: 2026-10-16T21:43:05.653Z. Retained South Dakota residential statute includes2026 amendment; private residential lease only. No individual damage or deduction amount determined.
Can a departing Madison renter request an itemized account of a withheld deposit?
Yes. Under retained §43-32-24, a tenant may request an itemized accounting of a withheld deposit; the landlord must supply it within45 days after tenancy termination. This is separate from the statute’s21-day deposit-return or specific-reason requirement.
Source record: 2026-10-16T21:43:05.653Z. Retained2026 statutory text; this does not restart or replace the separate21-day obligation, whose tenancy-termination and forwarding-instruction triggers remain unchanged.
Must a non-degree-seeking DSU student always satisfy the two-year campus-living rule?
Regents Policy3.7.1 lists non-degree-seeking students among those ordinarily granted a housing waiver. The student still must submit the institutional request and obtain approval; non-degree status does not itself issue a private lease or a room release.
Source record: 2026-10-16T21:43:55.737Z. Retained policy source lists April2026 revision. DSU physical Madison campus; institutional procedure/approval controls.
Does basic military training alone qualify for DSU’s military housing-waiver category?
No. Policy3.7.1 describes veterans or current Armed Forces, Guard or Reserve members with at least one consecutive year of active federal or state service beyond initial basic and job training. It lists DD214,NGB22,active-duty orders or a current LES confirming qualifying service as documentation. Submit the waiver for institutional approval.
Source record: 2026-10-16T21:43:55.737Z. Policy3.7.1 retained with April2026 source revision; no personal service eligibility or automatic waiver accepted.
