The short answer

Yes. Students under contract may terminate only as allowed by the contract and UT's residence rules.

Is the UT Austin residence hall contract binding once my student signs it?

UT Austin's institutional rules state that a student under a housing contract may not terminate it except as provided in the contract and the University's termination rules. Parents should treat the signed agreement as a real financial obligation rather than a no-risk reservation.

What does my student have to do before signing a UT Austin housing contract?

Current incoming-student guidance says contract offers are emailed on the 1st and 15th beginning February 15. A $300 prepayment must be submitted before the contract is signed. If the admission application fee was waived, that prepayment is deferred. Students younger than 18 need a guarantor who is at least 18.

Can my student cancel a UT Austin residence hall contract before move-in?

UT's Fall 2026 Mooov-In guidance publishes a cancellation schedule: $300 on or before June 1, $500 after June 1, $1,000 after July 1, and $2,000 after August 1. The $300 prepayment is applied toward the penalty. The student must follow UT Housing's cancellation instructions; simply deciding not to move in does not erase the contract.

The 2026-27 Mooov-In Guide expressly says a resident cannot be released from the contract after accepting the key and identifies May 4, 2027 as the contract end date. Families should resolve any housing decision before key acceptance and consult the signed Terms and Conditions for controlling details.

What happens to the housing contract if my student withdraws from UT Austin?

For voluntary withdrawal during the contract period, UT's institutional rules say students normally pay room-and-meal charges through checkout plus $300 in liquidated damages and normally must move within 24 hours after withdrawing. If a student is released and then re-enrolls during the original contract period, contract liability can return. Required withdrawals have their own rules.

Could my student owe both UT Austin housing and an off-campus lease at the same time?

UT's 2026-27 guidance treats the residence-hall contract as continuing through May 4, 2027 after key acceptance. An off-campus lease is a separate agreement and does not itself release the student from UT housing. Families should obtain written UT release confirmation before signing replacement housing.
