Start with the campus and your timeline
School and move-in eligibility
Use the official Stony Brook University source for the relevant campus and academic year before signing a lease or planning a student move into a family-owned home. A landlord’s approval does not establish university eligibility.
Parent and out-of-state planning
Match the lease or purchase timeline to the school calendar. For a remote move, verify the exact campus destination, inspection and touring arrangements, utilities, emergency access and maintenance responsibilities.
For a family purchase, verify occupancy, roommate rules, HOA restrictions, financing and the post-graduation plan for the actual home. Property-specific eligibility and availability are not established by this hub.

How do Stony Brook’s graduate and undergraduate apartment-housing eligibility tracks differ?
Stony Brook describes separate apartment-housing tracks. Schomburg Apartments on West Campus and Chapin Apartments on East Campus serve matriculated graduate and health-science graduate students. The university’s continuing and transfer housing information separately identifies undergraduate apartment-style housing at junior standing, U3/U4, or higher. Check the student’s degree level and standing before comparing these options. Graduate eligibility should not be applied to an undergraduate, and earlier-year or transfer suite options should not be assumed to have the same apartment eligibility rules. The official information reviewed on October 17, 2026 establishes these distinctions and campus locations. It does not establish an individual placement, a particular residence or unit, or current availability. Confirm the applicable housing track and an actual university assignment before making move-in arrangements.

What residency-specific 2026–27 undergraduate cost estimates does Stony Brook publish?
Stony Brook’s undergraduate admissions information gives estimated 2026–27 full-time undergraduate cost-of-attendance totals of $34,819 for New York residents and $58,799 for out-of-state students. Published components include $12,291 for campus housing and $7,450 for a meal plan. Keep the residency category attached to the total when comparing budgets. These are university estimates stated as of February 20, 2026 and subject to finalized SUNY rates. The official source was reviewed on October 17, 2026; that review does not turn the estimate into a final student bill. Confirm the applicable residency classification, final charges, enrollment and living arrangement with the university. A commuter’s budget and an individual resident’s bill can differ. Campus housing and meal-plan amounts are not private-rent quotes or charges that should automatically be added to a commuter’s costs.
