Start with the campus and your timeline

School and move-in eligibility

Use the official East Carolina University source for the relevant campus and academic year before signing a lease or planning a student move into a family-owned home. A landlord’s approval does not establish university eligibility.

Parent and out-of-state planning

Match the lease or purchase timeline to the school calendar. For a remote move, verify the exact campus destination, inspection and touring arrangements, utilities, emergency access and maintenance responsibilities.

For a family purchase, verify occupancy, roommate rules, HOA restrictions, financing and the post-graduation plan for the actual home. Property-specific eligibility and availability are not established by this hub.

Housing rules, leases and roommates

What residence requirement and two-semester exemption benchmark does ECU publish?

ECU’s residence regulation generally requires nonexempt enrolled students, including ordinary first-year students, to live in an approved residence hall. Having already lived on campus for two full semesters is an automatic-exemption benchmark. Other listed exemptions can apply earlier, and spring starters have a specific second-semester waiver rule. The regulation also discusses completed-credit criteria. Ask Campus Living which provision applies to your circumstances before making an off-campus housing commitment.

Source record: 2026-10-17. The regulation applies more broadly than first-year students alone. Listed exemptions and the spring-start waiver can change the ordinary timeline; this guide does not determine an individual exemption. The policy was updated May 27, 2026. Guidance checked October 17, 2026. The policy does not guarantee an assignment or establish housing capacity, a private-renter count, demand, or current private-unit availability.

What 2026–27 Ballard standard-room rate does ECU publish?

For 2026–27, ECU lists a standard room in Ballard Hall at $3,347 per semester, or $6,694 for the fall-and-spring academic year. Use this figure as a room-rate benchmark. Suite, private-bath, and single configurations have different rates, and options marked limited carry availability qualifications. Ask ECU for the charges and availability of the room configuration you are considering, including any meal-plan, fee, or deposit charges.

Source record: 2026-10-17. These figures apply only to the 2026–27 Ballard standard-room benchmark. The room rate does not establish meal-plan, fees, deposits, utilities, all inclusions, or total cost of attendance; it is not an all-inclusive room-and-board or private-rent quote. Other room configurations have different rates, and options marked limited have availability qualifications. Guidance checked October 17, 2026.
