Start with the campus and your timeline
School and move-in eligibility
Use the official Black Hills State University source for the relevant campus and academic year before signing a lease or planning a student move into a family-owned home. A landlord’s approval does not establish university eligibility.
Parent and out-of-state planning
Match the lease or purchase timeline to the school calendar. For a remote move, verify the exact campus destination, inspection and touring arrangements, utilities, emergency access and maintenance responsibilities.
For a family purchase, verify occupancy, roommate rules, HOA restrictions, financing and the post-graduation plan for the actual home. Property-specific eligibility and availability are not established by this hub.

Housing rules, leases and roommates
Can an international student's work income be assumed to cover a lease?
BHSU’s retained international guidance permits F-1/J-1 on-campus work up to twenty hours weekly during school and up to forty during summer and winter breaks. Treat those as published ceilings, not promised hours or wages. Confirm actual status-specific authorization and the job offer before relying on earnings for rent.

Can reducing my course load make my existing campus room unavailable?
The 2026–27 agreement conditions university-housing occupancy on BHSU enrollment and satisfactory attendance, with at least six undergraduate credits or five graduate credits; exceptions need the Residence Life director’s approval. Establish an exception or alternative lodging before reducing enrollment below that minimum. This occupancy threshold is different from who must live on campus.

Does basic military training alone establish a military live-on exemption?
The retained appeal policy describes the military category for veterans or current active-duty members, including Guard/Reserve, with at least one consecutive year of active federal or state service beyond initial-entry basic and job training. It names service records, orders or a qualifying earnings statement as documentation. Establish the actual exemption before selecting private housing; initial training or a military label alone does not satisfy this published service-duration condition.
Source record: 2026-10-16T21:42:45.803Z. Specific military exemption route only; actual approval and separate housing-contract financial release remain necessary.
Can an international student remove health insurance from the moving budget because a family policy exists?
BHSU’s retained guidance requires F-1/J-1 students to purchase the Regents health plan each semester unless a limited waiver is approved. Comparable coverage must meet the plan minimums; the waiver request is due by each semester’s first class day and approval is not guaranteed. Carry the required insurance expense until the actual waiver decision. This is medical coverage, separate from the residence property insurance addressed elsewhere.
