A published cost of attendance is an education budget, not necessarily the amount a student will pay. Federal Student Aid includes tuition, fees, books, supplies, food and housing in that budget and defines net price by subtracting grant and scholarship amounts on the aid offer. JHU's cost-estimation resources can help a family organize a preliminary estimate. For an actual decision, compare the student's own aid offer with the applicable charges and estimated living costs. Keep grants and scholarships distinct from loans, which are part of offered aid but must be repaid. Confirm which housing amounts are billed directly and which are allowances for expenses paid elsewhere. Neither a general cost-of-attendance figure nor a calculator result determines every student's final bill, actual rental costs, cash on hand or out-of-pocket payment.
