How are roommates assigned at UC Santa Cruz?
During Room Selection, a confirmed roommate group can select a matching shared space if one is available. Students who do not select a space may be assigned by a Housing Coordinator. Assignment fit can include room type, community, group size and gender configuration.
Can my student choose their roommate?
UCSC allows roommate groups in Room Selection when all members meet the applicable eligibility and community requirements. Every member must be able to fit the exact shared space selected.
Is a requested roommate guaranteed?
Roommate groups can participate in Room Selection, but UCSC does not guarantee that a requested group will fit into an available room or apartment. The housing guarantee itself is for a space, not a roommate or room configuration.
Can requesting a particular roommate reduce our room or dorm options?
UCSC only shows a roommate group shared spaces matching the group's exact size and gender composition. If no matching space remains, the group may need to split into smaller groups or have students participate individually.
What should my student do if they do not get along with their roommate?
UCSC encourages roommates to discuss expectations early and use a roommate agreement. For conflict, the RA/NA is the first residential support resource; housing staff can help with escalation and room-change questions.
Can my student change rooms after move-in?
Students should work through their RA/NA and Housing Coordinator rather than move on their own. Housing availability and the circumstances of the request determine whether a change can be approved.
