RELOCATION GUIDE

Moving to Boston from somewhere else?

A photo can only tell you so much. If you’re choosing a home from out of town, let’s sort out what someone needs to see in person, who can help locally, and when you’ll need to be here.

A photo can only tell you so much. If you’re choosing a home from out of town, let’s sort out what someone needs to see in person, who can help locally, and when you’ll need to be here.

Here’s where to start

You can begin a Boston housing search remotely, but photographs and video are only part of the review. Coordinate live property access, independent inspections, building documents, financing and a clear handoff plan.

Give the local search a precise brief

Share your campus or workplace, intended move date, housing arrangement, budget, and must-have features. Explain who will occupy the home and how long you expect to keep it. Decide which decisions you can make remotely and which require an in-person visit. Frank can help narrow the property search around those priorities.

Look beyond the listing photographs

Ask for a live walkthrough, the layout, building entry and common areas, storage, mechanical systems, and the surroundings. Confirm dimensions that matter to you. Arrange appropriate independent inspections and document review; a video tour cannot answer every condition or ownership question.

Make the building and financing reviews work together

Provide association information and the intended occupancy to your financing professional early. Ask about the requirements for a parent purchase, second home, or investment scenario without assuming the property qualifies. Frank handles the real estate discussion; Matt reviews financing and confirms applicable licensing and eligibility.

Plan for ownership after the move

Identify who handles keys, emergencies, maintenance, and any permitted rental activity. Compare the plan if you leave Boston earlier than expected or remain longer. Before closing or signing a lease, confirm the funds, signatures, insurance, utility setup, and move-in arrangements with the professionals responsible.

What to verify beyond listing photographs

  • Request a continuous live walkthrough showing entrances, common areas and the unit.
  • Ask about condition, mechanical systems, noise and features that a camera may not resolve.
  • Identify who will review inspections, title, association documents and deadlines.
  • Keep a shared decision log with the address, unresolved questions and responsible contact.
  • Confirm wire or payment instructions through a separately verified phone number; do not rely on a changed email alone.

Let’s talk about your plans.

Frank Carroll, Vice President at Compass, is the local property and relocation contact. For financing, keep the BU property and assumptions together in the state-aware BU financing review, then confirm the appropriately licensed Massachusetts originator before applying. Matt Dean of NEXA Lending, NMLS #227603, may help with planning, but this guide does not present him as the Massachusetts mortgage originator.
