At the University of Houston, the key point is that a roommate’s rent shortfall can become the other roommates’ problem if everyone is on the lease together, because the UH off-campus housing guidance says roommates are typically responsible for the apartment’s total expenses, and if one moves out the others must cover the missing rent and utilities. If a roommate is not on the lease, UH says that person cannot be held legally responsible for the rent.
