How are roommates assigned at Georgia Tech?
After securing housing, students can use My Housing to search for and select roommates. If a student does not form a roommate group, Georgia Tech can assign another resident to the remaining space; roommate information appears through the housing portal as assignments are made.
Can my student choose their roommate?
Georgia Tech provides a roommate-search and roommate-group process after the student completes the housing application and secures housing. Both students must complete the required housing steps and mutually form the group before room selection.
How does Georgia Tech roommate matching work if my student does not pick someone?
Students are not required to preselect a roommate. The housing system may assign another resident to an open space, and the contract requires students to keep an unoccupied bed and shared space ready for a new roommate.
Is a requested roommate guaranteed?
The 2026–27 housing contract says roommate requests are subject to availability and are not guaranteed. Both students must complete the required process, and the group still needs an available space that can accommodate them.
Can requesting a particular roommate reduce our room or dorm options?
During self-selection, a roommate group can only choose inventory that can accommodate the group's members. A student prioritizing a specific roommate may therefore have fewer building or room-type choices than a student selecting a single open bed.
Can my student change their room or roommate before move-in?
For incoming 2026–27 first-years, Georgia Tech scheduled Room Swap from July 6 through July 31 after initial room selection. Students use the official swap process rather than moving themselves to an unassigned room.
What should my student do if they do not get along with their roommate?
Georgia Tech's resident-support structure places RAs close to residents and provides Hall Directors and other professional staff for escalation. Students should address concrete living issues directly, use the roommate agreement, and ask the RA for mediation before pursuing a room change unless safety requires immediate staff or police involvement.
Can my student change rooms after move-in?
After move-in, students should work with their Hall Director or other Housing staff rather than changing rooms on their own. Georgia Tech can authorize moves based on circumstances and available inventory; the contract also reserves the University's reassignment authority.
What happens if my student's roommate moves out?
A vacancy does not convert a shared room into a private room. The housing contract and room-readiness rules allow Georgia Tech to fill open beds, consolidate residents or reassign space, and residents must keep the vacant portion ready for another student.
